Evaluation for 5.4c
Materials include embedded teacher guidance to support the application of appropriate mathematical language to include vocabulary, syntax, and discourse to include guidance to support mathematical conversations that provide opportunities for students to hear, refine, and use math language with peers and develop their math language toolkit over time as well as guide teachers to support student responses using exemplar responses to questions and tasks.
The materials include educator guidance to support students’ application of mathematical language throughout instruction. Each lesson incorporates multiple “Mathematical Language Routines” (MLRs) to structure mathematical discourse. Guidance provides scripted questions, anticipated student responses, and discussion prompts that encourage students to explain their reasoning using precise mathematical vocabulary. Students listen to classmates’ explanations, compare mathematical representations, refine their thinking through peer discussions, and communicate mathematical ideas using appropriate vocabulary and syntax. The materials also provide educator guidance for addressing misconceptions and extending students’ responses, helping students strengthen their mathematical language over time.
The materials embed language supports in the
Teacher’s Guide for each lesson. For example, in module 4, lesson 2, guidance includes “Support understanding of vocabulary by providing students with a visual diagram showing a graph and equation of a direct variation labeled with ‘proportional relationship, linear equation, direct variation, constant of proportionality, slope, constant of variation.’” This guidance supports students in developing precise vocabulary for problems involving direct variations. The materials also provide sentence stems to support students in communicating their thinking and multiple opportunities for peer-to-peer discussions.
Additionally, each module incorporates a “Stronger and Clearer Each Time” language routine that allows students to use, hear, and refine mathematical language. The routine asks students to share their thoughts with a partner, ask thoughtful questions, and revise their response. The materials include embedded educator guidance to support the routine. For example, in lesson 5.2, guidance prompts educators to “Remind students to ask questions that focus on describing each other’s thinking about how using different ratios affects each model’s accuracy, and to use insights from the discussion to refine their models and predictions.” The materials also include exemplar responses to all guiding questions.
