Evaluation for 5.4b
Materials include embedded teacher guidance to scaffold and support students' development and use of academic mathematical vocabulary in context.
The materials include embedded educator guidance that supports students’ development and use of academic mathematical vocabulary within the instructional context. Throughout the materials, educators are provided with routines, discussion prompts, and visual supports to help students develop and apply precise mathematical language as they engage in meaningful mathematical tasks and discussions.
The materials embed vocabulary development within mathematical content by providing educator guidance that connects academic language to models, representations, and mathematical reasoning. In module 4, “Multiply Decimals,” educators model decimal multiplication using objects, area models, and place-value strategies while students explain multiplication strategies using terms such as
decimal,
product,
place value,
area model, and
estimate. Similarly, in module 6, “Represent Fractions Using the Same Whole,” educators use fraction circles, fraction tiles, fraction bars, and number lines to support students as they apply vocabulary such as
equivalent fractions,
benchmark fractions,
numerator,
denominator, and
mixed numbers while representing fractions and justifying their reasoning. Additional lessons reinforce terms such as
polygon,
heptagon,
nonagon,
expanded notation,
partial products, and
distributive property through “Turn and Talk” routines, partner discussions, and explanations that require students to communicate their mathematical thinking using precise vocabulary.
The materials also provide embedded language supports and instructional routines that help students acquire and apply academic mathematical vocabulary. The
Teacher’s Guide incorporates strategies such as “Turn and Talk,” ELPS supports, and emergent bilingual scaffolds that encourage students to elaborate on their ideas, create visuals to represent mathematical terms, and use sentence frames during discussions. The
Language Development Resource Guide includes resources such as the “High-Utility Word” routine and “Quick-Teach” routine to strengthen vocabulary comprehension and application across content areas. Additionally, lessons incorporate the “Words to Learn” routine to introduce and reinforce domain-specific terms, such as
income,
tax,
income tax, and
payroll tax, ensuring that students develop the vocabulary needed to explain their mathematical thinking accurately in context.
