Evaluation for 3.3c
Materials include embedded guidance for teachers to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic vocabulary, increasing comprehension, building background knowledge, and making cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse.
The materials include embedded guidance to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic vocabulary, increasing comprehension, and making cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse. For example, in module 16, lesson 4, task 2, the ELPS “Teaching Strategy” directs educators to help students examine the word
quarter and use the surrounding context to determine its mathematical meaning. Students discuss that
quarter can have multiple meanings and use the terms
quarter and
fourth as they explain their thinking with partners. Through discussion and contextual analysis of vocabulary, students strengthen comprehension, develop academic language, and make connections between language and mathematical concepts.
The materials include embedded guidance to support emergent bilingual students in increasing comprehension through oral and written discourse. For example, in module 4, lesson 1, the “Three Reads” routine guides students through multiple readings of a problem to build understanding of the context, quantities, and question being asked. Students discuss the problem, identify important numbers, explain what the quantities represent, and consider possible strategies before solving. Through repeated readings, educator questioning, and collaborative discussion, students develop comprehension and communicate mathematical thinking.
Beyond supporting comprehension, the materials include embedded guidance to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic vocabulary and building background knowledge through oral and written discourse. For example, in module 8, lesson 1, task 3, students explain the meaning of mathematical symbols, describe solution strategies, and communicate reasoning using mathematical vocabulary. Additionally, the emergent bilingual support in the “Quick Check” provides sentence frames such as “My addends are ___ and ___” and “I count on from ___ to get the sum ___.” This supports students in organizing and expressing mathematical thinking by using complete sentences and precise academic language. Students build conceptual understanding while developing the vocabulary and language structures to communicate mathematical ideas through oral and written discourse.
