Evaluation for 5.4c
Materials include embedded teacher guidance to support the application of appropriate mathematical language to include vocabulary, syntax, and discourse to include guidance to support mathematical conversations that provide opportunities for students to hear, refine, and use math language with peers and develop their math language toolkit over time as well as guide teachers to support student responses using exemplar responses to questions and tasks.
The materials include educator guidance to support students’ application of mathematical language throughout instruction. Each lesson incorporates multiple “Mathematical Language Routines” to structure mathematical discourse. Guidance includes scripted questions, anticipated student responses, and discussion prompts that encourage students to explain their reasoning using precise mathematical vocabulary. Students listen to classmates’ explanations, compare mathematical representations, refine their thinking through peer discussions, and communicate mathematical ideas using appropriate vocabulary and syntax. The materials also provide educator guidance for addressing misconceptions and extending student responses, helping students strengthen their mathematical language over time.
The materials embed language supports in the
Teacher’s Guide for each lesson. For example, in module 5, lesson 2, the materials scaffold mathematical vocabulary and syntax at multiple levels through the use of sentence frames, such as “I see _____. This part is _____. The total is _____.” and “First, I find…, Next, I add…, Then, I write….,” along with a word bank containing
partial product,
sum,
expression, and
expand. Guidance states that educators should “Provide time for revising with peer feedback” and record “key phrases and visuals” for students to reference as they explain their reasoning. The lesson embeds vocabulary, syntax, discourse, peer feedback, and revision within the mathematical task.
Additionally, each module incorporates the “Stronger and Clearer Each Time” language routine, which allows students to use, hear, and refine mathematical language. The routine has students share thoughts with a partner, ask thoughtful questions, and revise their response. The materials include embedded educator guidance to support the routine. For example, guidance from lesson 9.1 states, “Remind students to ask questions of each other that focus on describing their thinking, especially related to like terms and substitution, and to then use insights from the discussion to refine their answers or reasoning.” The materials also include exemplar responses to all guiding questions.
