Evaluation for 6.2a
Materials support teachers in guiding students to share and reflect on their problem-solving approaches, including explanations, arguments, and justifications.
In grade 6, unit 6, lesson 8, activity 2, “Clasificación de tarjetas: ¿Es una oferta?,” the materials support educators in guiding students to share and reflect on their problem-solving approaches, including explanations, arguments, and justifications. Students first solve pricing scenarios independently, then explain their reasoning to a partner, compare alternative solution strategies, and revise their decisions based on peer discussion before reaching a consensus. Educator guidance directs educators to select students who used different strategies, such as comparing unit rates, scaling equivalent ratios, or using proportional tables, and facilitate a discussion highlighting the similarities and differences among the approaches. Through the “Math Language Routine 2: Recolectar y mostrar” routine, educators record and connect students’ mathematical language and strategies. The materials state, “Escucha y observa cómo los estudiantes razonan sobre las ofertas y toman sus decisiones (oferta o no oferta), y toma nota de las diferentes estrategias que usan para comparar razones unitarias . . . .
In grade 6, unit 12, lesson 17, activity 3, “Aviones de papel,” the materials support educators in guiding students to share and reflect on their problem-solving approaches through explanations, arguments, and justifications while interpreting box plots. Students compare box plot representations, explain similarities and differences, and justify their interpretations using evidence from the data. Educator guidance prompts students to reflect on their reasoning and make connections between multiple representations.
These supports guide students to explain, compare, and justify their mathematical thinking while reflecting on multiple interpretations of the data.
