Evaluation for 5.3b
Questions and tasks include the use of concrete models and manipulatives, pictorial representations (figures/drawings), and abstract representations, as required by the TEKS.
In unit 5, lesson 18, “Problemas sobre perímetro y área,” the materials include tasks that require students to use concrete models, pictorial representations, and abstract representations to explore perimeter, area, and measurement conversions as required by the TEKS. Students use inch tiles and measurement tools to construct and measure figures, providing a concrete model of the concepts. Students then use grid paper, visual diagrams, and drawings to represent their thinking and analyze relationships among measurements. In activity 2, students apply these representations to a real-world task involving the design of a class banner, determining how to use or partition poster paper to meet design requirements and converting between feet and inches. Students connect their models to abstract representations by writing equations, performing calculations, and explaining their reasoning to determine area, perimeter, and unit conversions.
In unit 1, lesson 8, students use abstract representations by comparing and ordering multi-digit numbers written in standard numerical form and justifying their reasoning using place-value concepts. Students also use pictorial representations, including drawings, diagrams, and place-value charts, to model and explain their comparison strategies, particularly as they revise and strengthen their explanations during “Math Language Routine 1: Cada vez más fuerte y más claro.” For example, students compare 54,000,000 and 587,000,000 by representing the values according to their place-value positions and explaining that 587,000,000 is greater because it is in the hundreds of millions, while 54,000,000 is only in the tens of millions. The lesson also provides opportunities for students to use concrete place-value representations as needed, helping them connect concrete models, pictorial representations, and abstract numerical reasoning when comparing large numbers.
