Evaluation for 4.2b
Materials demonstrate coherence across units by connecting the content and language learned in previous courses/grade levels and what will be learned in future courses/grade levels to the content to be learned in the current course/grade level.
In grade 1, unit 1, lesson 1, activity 1, “Revisitar colecciones para contar hasta 20,” the materials explicitly connect students’ prior grade K learning to current grade-level content and future learning. Students build on their grade K experiences counting and composing numbers to 10 by counting collections of up to 20 objects and representing their thinking with drawings, numbers, or words while developing more efficient counting strategies, such as grouping and counting by twos or tens. The lesson notes that students will continue using “Counting Collections” and ten-frames in future lessons, reinforcing these strategies throughout the grade. In activity 2, “Carrera numérica, sumar hasta 10,” students build on their prior understanding of addition within 10 by finding the total number of dots on two dot cubes using a variety of counting and addition strategies. The materials connect mathematical language across units and previous grade levels by introducing and reinforcing vocabulary such as
objetos,
colecciones,
sumar,
expresión,
total, and
marco de 10, which students continue to use as they develop more advanced mathematical concepts.
For example, in grade 1, unit 2, the
Guía de planificación a nivel de sección, section B, connects current learning to students’ prior grade K experiences with joining and separating. The materials state that work with problems to “Juntar y separar . . . se basa en el trabajo del jardín de infancia, cuando los estudiantes componían números hasta 10 de diferentes maneras.” This directly references grade K, unit 3, where students have counted, composed, and decomposed numbers up to 10 using mathematical tools such as
fichas,
cubos encajables,
marcos de 5, and
marcos de 10. In this lesson, students extend their understanding by solving formal addition and subtraction story problems, writing and interpreting equations, determining unknown quantities, and developing the meaning of the equal sign. The materials also maintain coherence in mathematical language by continuing the use of terms such as
suma,
resta,
ecuación, and
desconocido, which support the transition from grade K concepts to grade 1 content and prepare students for increasingly sophisticated work with operations in future lessons.
