Evaluation for 5.5a
TEKS process standards are integrated appropriately into the materials.
Unit 1, lessons 1.1 and 1.2, appropriately integrate the TEKS process standards as students apply estimation, addition, and subtraction to real-world contexts. In lesson 1.1, students estimate sums and differences using a Battle of the Flowers Parade context, evaluate which estimate is most accurate, and explain how to improve an estimate. In lesson 1.2 students use a road trip map from Dallas to national parks to add and subtract mileage, estimate to check reasonableness, and solve real-world problems involving distances, stadium tickets, Texas land and water area, and app downloads. These tasks integrate problem solving, mathematical reasoning, representation, communication, and real-world application.
Unit 3, lesson 3.4 “Use Volume Formulas,” integrates the TEKS process standards as students connect models, formulas, and reasoning to solve volume problems. Students use unit cubes to build a prism, compare the number of cubes in each layer to the area of the base, and derive formulas for volume, including
V =
B ×
h and
V =
l ×
w ×
h. Students also compare Kira’s strategy of multiplying length, width, and height and decide whether the method always works. Students also use formulas to solve problems involving rectangular prisms, cubes, missing dimensions, planters, and a container of homemade ice cream. These tasks require students to analyze relationships, select strategies, communicate reasoning, and justify formula use.
