Evaluation for 4.1a
Practice opportunities over the course of a lesson and/or unit (including instructional assessments) require students to demonstrate depth of understanding aligned to the TEKS.
In the
Student Practice Book, module 1, topic 1, students demonstrate depth of understanding by modeling and calculating volume using unit cubes, rectangular prisms, layers, and formulas. Students determine the area of the base and the volume of rectangular prisms, calculate volume using given dimensions, and connect area of the base to total volume. These practice opportunities require students to connect visual models, dimensions, area, volume, and formulas rather than simply substituting values into an equation.
In the
Student Practice Book, module 1, topic 1, lesson 8, students propose sets of dimensions for boxes with specified volumes, determine the volume of a cube, compare the volume of two toy boxes with different dimensions, and explain which box has the greater volume. These tasks require students to apply volume concepts, reason about dimensions, compare quantities, and explain their mathematical thinking in problem contexts.
