Evaluation for 5.4a
Materials provide opportunities for students to develop academic mathematical language using visuals, manipulatives, and other language development strategies.
In the
Teacher’s Implementation Guide, module 1, topic 2, lesson 2, students develop academic mathematical language through visuals, manipulatives, and intentional language-development strategies. Students examine a visual of four quadrilaterals and discuss their similarities and differences using mathematical vocabulary such as
quadrilateral, rectangle, square, trapezoid, sides, and
vertices. During the Think-Pair-Share discussion, students compare attributes, explain why each figure is or is not a quadrilateral, and justify their thinking using precise mathematical language. The “Emergent Bilingual Student Support” section extends vocabulary development by connecting the word part
quad to
quadrilateral and encouraging discussion of the term’s meaning. Later, students use polygon cards to match polygon names to corresponding shapes, reinforcing mathematical language through hands-on practice.
In the
Teacher’s Implementation Guide, module 1, topic 2, lesson 6, students develop academic mathematical language through visuals, manipulatives, and targeted language-development strategies. Students use geoblocks to observe and discuss three-dimensional solids and then read formal definitions for
face, edge, and
vertex in the “Solid Gold” activity. Students use diagrams to visually identify each attribute; return to the physical manipulatives to count the faces, edges, and vertices; and describe the shapes of the faces. The “Language Link” supports students in distinguishing between two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures and defining a face, helping them connect vocabulary to concrete models and visual representations.
