Evaluation for 5.5a
TEKS process standards are integrated appropriately into the materials.
The materials appropriately integrate TEKS process standards into instruction by embedding problem solving, reasoning, communication, modeling, and justification within grade-level mathematical tasks. The
Math Practice Book and the
Implementation Guide direct the educator by embedding mathematical process standards through instructional routines, and students are encouraged to explain their reasoning, critique strategies, and represent mathematical ideas in multiple forms, such as tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal explanations.
The
TEKS-tivity Book emphasizes conceptual development through math talks, exploration activities, debriefings, academic discussions, journals, and vocabulary components. Students are allowed to articulate strategies, compare representations, and justify solutions. Each unit has a Unit Overview that explicitly states the unit progression and what the students should be able to do. It also states what students are required to do, for example, in Unit One: “students are required to explain their thinking about how numbers are classified and the relationship between number sets.”
The materials integrate mathematical process standards through instructional routines such as “Math Talks”, “partner discussions”, “journals”, and activities requiring students to connect multiple representations. For example, students determine equivalent forms using visual models, fractions, decimals, and percents, and explain the process they used to make the connections. Additional activities require students to analyze errors, justify solutions, and explain their proportional reasoning, while educators facilitate discussion with questions that prompt students to explain and defend their mathematical thinking.
