TEKS process standards are integrated appropriately into the materials.
The materials appropriately integrate TEKS process standards into instruction by embedding problem solving, reasoning, communication, modeling, and justification within grade-level mathematical tasks. The
Math Practice Book and the
Implementation Guide direct the educator by embedding mathematical process standards through instructional routines, and students are encouraged to explain their reasoning, critique strategies, and represent mathematical ideas in multiple forms, such as tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal explanations. The
TEKS-tivity Book emphasizes conceptual development through math talks, exploration activities, debriefings, academic discussions, journals, and vocabulary components. Students are allowed to articulate strategies, compare representations, and justify solutions. Each unit has a Unit Overview that explicitly states the unit progression and what the students should be able to do. It also states what students are required to do, for example, in Unit One: “students apply mathematical process standards to represent addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division while solving problems and justifying solutions.”
In Unit 4: Proportionality - Foundations of Ratios and Rates, in the
6th Grade Advanced TEKS-tivity Book, materials fully address the Mathematical Process Standards by engaging students in problem-solving, making connections among multiple representations, and communicating their mathematical reasoning. Students match equivalent representations of real-world situations, models, fractions, decimals, and percents. As they complete the task, students analyze the information on each card and examine the relationships among the different representations to determine equivalence. The activity requires students to connect and communicate mathematical ideas using multiple representations of the same value. After identifying equivalents, students explain their process and justify their reasoning. This activity integrates the Mathematical Process Standards by providing opportunities for students to apply mathematics in real-world contexts, analyze relationships, communicate reasoning, and justify solutions with precise mathematical language.
