Evaluation for 5.1a
Questions and tasks require students to interpret, analyze, and evaluate models and representations for mathematical concepts and situations.
In unit 3, lesson 1, activity 1.3, students analyze a graph that represents the relationship between the cost of ingredients and the sales price of food. Students interpret values from the graph to determine approximate outputs for given inputs and analyze the structure of the linear relationship to estimate the slope and
y-intercept. Students evaluate how the graph represents the relationship between cost and price and explain the meaning of the slope and
y-intercept in context. For example, students respond to the question “Why would a food item with free ingredients still cost $0.76?” by interpreting the
y-intercept as a fixed cost represented in the model. In this way, students interpret, analyze, and evaluate models and representations for mathematical concepts and situations.
In unit 8, lesson 3, activity 3.3, students interpret and analyze a visual pattern of growing squares to understand how the structure changes at each step. Students evaluate how the pattern supports the expression
n(
n + 2) and connect the visual model to the expanded form
n² + 2
n. As students examine the structure of the pattern, they analyze how growth changes across steps and evaluate why the relationship is not linear. Educators support students in justifying the equivalence of
n(
n + 2) and
n² + 2
n using diagrams and symbolic representations.
