Evaluation for 5.4a
Materials provide opportunities for students to develop academic mathematical language using visuals, manipulatives, and other language development strategies.
In unit 2, lesson 2, activity 2.2, students develop academic mathematical language using visuals, manipulatives, and language development strategies while exploring the area of non-rectangular shapes. Students use physical tangram pieces and visual representations to compose, decompose, arrange, and rearrange figures. The materials support vocabulary development by connecting informal student language to academic mathematical terms. The educator guidance states, “Demonstrate the use of the word ‘compose’ by repeating students’ everyday language use and then recast using the formal terms here.” This strategy supports students in using precise mathematical vocabulary to describe their geometric reasoning.
In unit 4, lesson 1, activity 1.3, students develop academic mathematical language using visuals, manipulatives, and collaborative discussion while exploring measurement concepts. Students sort cards based on length, volume, weight, or mass while using vocabulary such as
quart,
gallon,
ton,
milliliter, and
kilogram. The educator provides visual and concrete supports, including household items, a quart-sized bottle, meter sticks, and rulers, to connect measurement vocabulary to real-world objects. After sorting the cards, students discuss their classifications with peers and explain their reasoning using the academic language of the lesson.
