Evaluation for 3.3c
Materials include embedded guidance for teachers to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic vocabulary, increasing comprehension, building background knowledge, and making cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse.
In the grade 2
Guía del maestro, Tema 6, “Adaptaciones del lenguaje,” the materials include a variety of embedded guidance to support emergent bilingual students. For example, in “Adaptaciones del lenguaje oral/escrito,” emergent bilinguals interact with the vocabulary words in the Tema to increase comprehension through oral and written discourse and develop academic vocabulary. This section includes vocabulary that is relevant to the topic, along with vocabulary from previous and future Temas. A table titled “Vocabulario en contexto” includes the vocabulary word, mathematical definition, and other meanings. For example, in Tema 6, the provided mathematical definition for the word
valor is “cuanto vale una moneda o un billete,” while another meaning is “la cualidad de ser útil o importante.” The section further breaks down the words by lesson, supporting emergent bilingual students in developing academic vocabulary, increasing comprehension, and building background knowledge by presenting the terms in the context of the Tema and real-life situations. Additionally, the materials for grade 2, Tema 12, “Adaptaciones del lenguaje” include “Transferencia metalingüística al inglés” guidance for transferable and nontransferable competencies related to numbers and place value concepts, while the “Cognados,” “Vocabulario académico,” and “Vocabulario en contexto” sections provide academic terms, contextualized definitions, and lesson-specific vocabulary support for emergent bilingual students during instruction.
Furthermore, the K–2 program overview includes language routines and language support activities. Language routines include “Collect and Display” for developing mathematical vocabulary and discourse, “Three Reads” for making sense of mathematical situations and problems, and “Compare and Connect” for analyzing mathematical concepts, representations, and language. In the activities guide, educators support emergent bilinguals in developing academic vocabulary, increasing comprehension, building background knowledge, and making cross-linguistic connections. For example, in the “Co-Craft Questions and Problems” activity, the students use conversation skills and content vocabulary while working in groups to generate questions, problems, and situations. The educator presents a mathematical equation and students write a math story that matches the given problem. Additionally, “Supporting Emergent Bilingual Students” identifies a “Language Support Activity” that provides lesson-specific opportunities for students to discuss mathematical concepts, explain their thinking, and communicate mathematical ideas through speaking and writing. “Presentacion del tema” includes a vocabulary activity that guides the educator to use a frayer model to interact with vocabulary words both orally and by writing. The section includes the definition, characteristics, examples, and nonexamples. The
Guía del maestro, lección 1-2 “Estrategias de suma” includes a section titled “Notas detalladas sobre las lecciones de Elaboremos,” where Note B references an online glossary available in both English and Spanish that provides visual representations of vocabulary terms and opportunities for oral language practice, supporting students in developing academic vocabulary both orally and in written form. Online materials include a
Spanish Academic Vocabulary Teacher’s Guide K–2, which includes teaching suggestions for 40 words. The guide supports the digital materials for these words with the student version of these materials that includes pronunciation, a student-friendly definition, a brief activity which uses the word in context, and an opportunity for students to use the word in a sentence for emergent bilinguals to practice oral and written discourse.
