Evaluation for 5.2c
Materials provide opportunities for students to evaluate procedures, processes, and solutions for efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy within the lesson and throughout a unit.
The
Guía del maestro provides multiple opportunities for students to evaluate procedures, processes, and solutions for efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy within the lesson or throughout the Tema. For example, the “Representémoslo en 3 actos” section includes “Acto 1, El anzuelo,” “Acto 2, El modelo,” and “Acto 3, La solución,” providing opportunities for students to use a video to develop questions from procedure evaluation, create models using mathematical processes and solutions for efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy within the lesson and throughout the Temas. For example, in lección 8-10 “Representémoslo en 3 actos, ¡Tantos vehiculos!” “Acto 1 El anzuelo” includes the opportunity for students to formulate predictions as they evaluate procedures and formulate questions. Educators ensure students have varied predictions and evaluate procedures including comprehension of the importance of thinking of unreasonable predictions. The section “Acto 2, El modelo” allows students to incorporate mathematical processes and solutions for efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy when creating their own model to represent and respond to the question. Students also apply the provided information prior to creating their models in “Revelar la información.” In “Acto 3, La solución,” the materials include using the provided video to reveal the answer to the initial question. The materials also include three sections to support opportunities for students to evaluate solutions for efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy with “Comprobar conclusiones” and “Reflexionar sobre el razonamiento,” where students must represent, explain, prove, and finally “Crear un problema.” Furthermore, in Tema 5, lección 5-1 “Expresiones iguales,” the “Seleccionar y poner en secuencia” section guides educators to present student work that includes misconceptions and correct reasoning related to equivalent expressions. Students compare different strategies, determine whether expressions have the same value, and explain their reasoning during the “Relacionar estrategias de solución” discussion. Additionally, students have opportunities to evaluate solutions through “Práctica y resolucion de problemas,” “Reflexión,” “Comprobación rápida,” and “Práctica adicional,” where they verify answers, analyze expressions, and justify whether equations are true.
Additionally, in the
Libro del estudiante,
Tema 2, lección 2-1, students determine the total number of beads on bracelets using different strategies and representations. The lesson directions state that students may use any strategy to find the total number of beads and then explain their strategy. Students also create and solve a new bracelet problem using different methods and discuss why using different strategies to find a sum can be useful. Furthermore, in
Guía del maestro lección 6-7 “Gomitas deliciosas,” the content objective is to use addition to solve a problem that may arise in everyday life, including using data. The lesson states, “Los estudiantes tienen la tarea de determinar cuántas gomitas de cada color hay en ambas bolsas, dada la información sobre el número de gomitas de cada color en cada bolsa.” Students participate in a question brainstorm after watching the video for this lesson to respond to the “Pregunta principal of “¿Cuántas gomitas de cada color hay en ambas bolsas?” As a whole group, students share their individual predictions while discussing their reasoning for why they believe their prediction is correct and reflecting on unreasonable answers. Students determine which model to use to represent the problem as they receive more information. Students can analyze and evaluate their models as they transition from “Acto 2” to “Acto 3.” After the reflection, students have the opportunity to create and solve a problem similar to the one they already solved. In Tema 3, lección 3-2 “Contar hacia adelante para sumar hasta 20,” students complete the task: “Abby tiene 4 cubos. Salina le da 7 cubos más. ¿Cuántos cubos tiene Abby ahora? Muestra tu razonamiento.” The materials include two student samples that show different solution strategies. The activity provides opportunities for students to share and compare their solutions, evaluate different procedures, and discuss how each strategy leads to the same answer. These opportunities promote efficiency because students can practice counting and applying a strategy. They promote flexibility because students use different representations, such as a number line and counters. The task also supports accuracy because students must verify that both procedures correctly show a total of 11 cubes.
