The materials provide opportunities for students to explore a variety of discipline-specific art forms, as evidenced in the table of contents for units 5, 6, and 7 in the
Student Edition. These pages list a variety of discipline-specific art forms focused on or applicable to technical theatre. The text spotlights playwrights from diverse backgrounds and various genres of technical work and allows students to engage with non-musical plays, musicals, television, film, and electronic media.
Chapter 27, titled “Other Theatre Forms,” introduces students to various discipline-specific art forms. For example, the chapter spotlights puppet theatre around the world, including Japanese Bunraku puppetry, Vietnamese water puppets, and shadow puppets from Java. Students also explore performance art, reader’s theatre, and poetry slams. Finally, students write and perform their own poetry-slam poem, allowing them to explore that art form through creation.
Unit 7 comprises a three-part series in which students explore theatre history, including a variety of genres and styles. This study covers theatre from early times to the modern era, allowing students to explore theatre over time. From the “two books of the Bible that read as dramatic literature” to the Greek tragedies and the Peking opera of China, the unit offers multiple opportunities for students to explore a range of theatrical art forms.
