Evaluation for 4.3c
Materials include guidance for teachers on promoting student agency in making or selecting discipline-specific artistic works for study, performance, exhibition, or presentation.
The materials provide opportunities for student agency throughout the
Student Edition, enabling students to make and select their own artistic works. However, the materials do not include guidance for educators on promoting student agency. Many of the chapter projects in the
Student Edition and the
Teacher’s Edition allow students to select their own materials for study and performance. In chapter 11, the chapter project requires students to select and perform a 10-minute play or a scene from a one-act or full-length play. The
Student Edition directs students to “get together with several classmates” to select a play. The
Teacher’s Edition side channel directs educators to “help students decide which plays would be appropriate for them based on their skill level and degree of sophistication.” However, the side channel does not explain how educators might promote student agency throughout that process. For their chapter 21 project, students must create a lighting design. The
Teacher’s Edition side channel directs educators to help students “select the scene for design or suggest the same scene they used for the set design.” The materials provide no additional instruction or guidance for educators on promoting student agency in selecting the works they will use.
The “Unit Implementation Guide” in the
Teacher Resource includes a “Sequence of Learning” section for each unit. Unit 8 includes “guided matching of texts to student strengths/goals,” but the material does not tell educators how to fulfill that directive. The unit gives students agency by encouraging them to select their own performance material, but it does not guide educators to promote that agency.
The course lesson plans address student agency, but they do not reference making or selecting discipline-specific works. For example, the student agency section in the lesson plans for chapter 1 indicates that students “choose which personal memory to recreate as a performance,” but the materials do not include guidance for educators on promoting student agency in making or selecting the artistic works.
