Evaluation for 4.1b
Materials explicitly connect new discipline-specific artistic literacy to prior learning across lessons and units within the course and across courses as applicable.
The Technical Theatre I course materials mainly appear in unit 5, chapters 19–25, of the
Student Edition and the
Teacher’s Edition. Most concepts are self-contained, with each chapter focusing on a different genre within technical theatre. For example, in chapter 21, the text introduces the role of the lighting crew during the production process. The
Teacher’s Edition wraparound prompts educators to remind students of the purpose of the technical rehearsal during the rehearsal process. Earlier in the same chapter, students learn about lighting plots, and the wraparound tells educators to reference prior learning about kinds and positioning of lighting instruments to reinforce new concepts.
The “Additional Projects” pages in the
Student Edition often remind students to refer to previous content when completing an assignment. For example, at the end of chapter 21, “Additional Project #3” instructs students to refer to specific pages for color information. Another example is the “Additional Projects” section in chapter 26, where the text instructs students to “refer to page 353 for ideas” on innovations and contributions of the United States to theatre.
The materials explicitly connect new artistic literacy concepts to those introduced early in the course. In the lesson plans, the “Build On” and “Artistic Literacy” sections clearly describe those connections, including references to specific vocabulary concepts introduced earlier. For example, the lesson for chapter 15 refers back to the production team’s vocabulary while outlining how students move from identification to more complex tasks of analysis.
