Materials include opportunities in each lesson for students to discuss specific aspects of grade-level Spanish text (e.g., authors' purpose, structure, language, vocabulary, etc.). (S)
In
Guía del maestro unit 4 “La civilización romana antigua,” the lesson 3 “Introducción a la lectura en voz alta” provides opportunities for students to discuss specific aspects of grade-level historical and literary texts before and during reading. Prior to the read-aloud, students work with a partner to define the term
leyenda, share their ideas with the class, and compare their understanding with the definition of mito introduced by the educator. Students discuss the characteristics of myths and legends and consider how these genres communicate stories about people, events, and cultural beliefs, establishing a foundation for analyzing the text’s genre, purpose, and content. The discussion also develops students’ understanding of key vocabulary and the relationship between the terms
mito and
leyenda, supporting their analysis of how language contributes to meaning. As students prepare to read, they use their developing understanding of these genres to anticipate and analyze the historical and literary elements presented in the text. Through partner discussion, whole-group sharing, and educator-guided questioning, the lesson provides opportunities for students to examine and discuss the text’s genre, purpose, language, vocabulary, and historical and literary content.
In
Guía del maestro unit 8 “Aprender de la tierra: regiones y culturas de los nativos americanos,” lesson 4 “Los pueblos nativos americanos de la gran zona del río Misisipi” engages students in discussions about the structure, language, vocabulary, and key ideas presented in grade-level informational texts. Before the read-aloud, educators introduce academic and domain-specific vocabulary, including
efigie,
ritual,
colmado, and
evidente, to prepare students for the text and support discussion of its content. During and after the “Lectura en voz alta,” students use question words such as
quién,
qué,
dónde,
cuándo,
por qué, and
cómo to analyze how information is organized and to explain important details about
los constructores de montículos. Through “Pelota de preguntas” and “Preguntas de comprensión,” students discuss the purposes of the
montículos, the cultural practices of the communities that built them, and the significance of their contributions, supporting meaningful discussions about vocabulary, text organization, author’s purpose, and historical content. The sequence provides opportunities for students to examine and discuss multiple aspects of grade-level Spanish texts, including genre, vocabulary, language, organization, purpose, and key ideas.
