Evaluation for 4.D.1a
Materials include a variety of grade-level texts to support students to read fluently according to the reading purpose. (S)
The materials provide a variety of grade-level texts that help students practice fluent reading across genres and purposes. The
Grades 4–5 Fluency Packet and the grade 5 units include literary, informational, biographical, historical, narrative, and poetic texts. For example, the
Fluency Packet contains poetry, folklore, fables, and informational selections. Unit 1 provides personal narratives, graphic essays, autobiographical excerpts, memoirs, and informational narratives such as “The Prince of Los Cocuyos: The First Real San Giving Day,” “Hello, My Name Is,” excerpts from Rosa Parks’ “My Story,” “Step by Step,” and “A View of the Earth.” Unit 2 expands fluency practice through informational and biographical texts in “Patrons, Artists, and Scholars,” including readings about Renaissance artists, scholars, and cultural developments. These texts give students opportunities to adjust fluency based on genre, structure, and reading purpose.
The materials provide fluency routines that help students practice rate, accuracy, expression, phrasing, and prosody. For example, in unit 5, students engage with poetry selections that represent multiple forms, structures, and traditions, including free verse, rhymed poetry, narrative poetry, contemporary poetry, and poetry from various cultural traditions. In unit 5, lesson 8, students read poems with a partner and are encouraged to read “clearly and fluently, using an appropriate tone” before providing feedback on one another’s oral reading. In unit 3, lesson 12, students take home an activity page connected to class reading and read it to a family member to build fluency. These routines help students adjust pacing, expression, stress, intonation, and interpretation according to the purpose and structure of the text.
