Evaluation for 4.D.1a
Materials include a variety of grade-level texts to support students to read fluently according to the reading purpose. (S)
The materials offer a variety of grade-level texts that help students practice fluent reading across genres and purposes. In the
Grades 4–5 Fluency Packet, the
K–5 Independent Reading Guide, and the grade 4 units, students read literary, informational, historical, biographical, scientific, and narrative texts. The
Fluency Packet provides poetry, folklore, fables, and other selections for repeated oral reading, while the
Independent Reading Guide recommends chapter books, picture books, informational texts, fiction, poetry, and plays. Grade 4, unit 1 includes personal narratives, a short essay, and excerpts from longer works. Unit 2 contains biographical articles, histories of inventions, and scientific explanations of simple machines. Unit 4 includes informational accounts of historical events and a literary selection tied to the same time period. These texts give students opportunities to adjust fluency based on genre, structure, and reading purpose.
The materials also provide fluency routines that help students practice rate, accuracy, expression, phrasing, and prosody. In grade 4, unit 1, lesson 7, students work with partners to read a conversation aloud. Students divide the conversational roles, are reminded that fluent readers read at a steady pace, read each sentence accurately, read with expression and feeling, and then reread the conversation several times to practice fluency. Grade 4, unit 3 also supports purposeful reading by having students engage with the text in varied ways, including silently, aloud, with partners, in small groups, and independently. These routines help students read aloud with expression and accuracy while responding to the purpose and demands of the text.
