Evaluation for 5.E.4a
Materials include a systematic sequence for introducing grade-level morphemes, as outlined in the TEKS. (PR 2.A.1)
The materials introduce morphemes in a planned sequence so that students build from simpler suffixes to more complex prefixes, suffixes, and word parts across the year. The
Curriculum Map outlines a progression of grade-level morphemes aligned with the TEKS. For example, students learn suffixes such as
-er and
-est in unit 1, are introduced to
un- and
re- while reviewing
-er and -
est in unit 3, and move on to more complex morphemes such as
-ly,
-ion,
-tion, and
-sion in unit 5. This sequence helps students understand word structure, spelling, and meaning as they encounter increasingly complex words.
The materials provide lesson-level instruction where students identify, decode, spell, and use words with grade-level morphemes. In unit 1, lesson 13, educators explicitly introduce the suffix
-ing by explaining that a suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a base word and that
-ing shows an action is taking place. Students practice decoding and encoding words with and without -
ing. In skills 2, lesson 1, students learn the suffix
-ed and discuss how adding -
ed signals that something happened in the past before later moving on to
-ing. In skills 5, lesson 15, students build on their prior knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and word parts by studying -
tion, including how the suffix changes a word’s form and contributes to meaning. These routines help students connect morphology, spelling, and word meaning during reading and word study.
