Evaluation for 4.B.3b
Materials include explicit (direct) instruction in decoding and encoding regular and irregular high-frequency words from a research-based list in alignment with grade-level TEKS as appropriate for the program's stated purpose.
The Amira Instruct educator-led lessons provide explicit, direct instruction in decoding regular and irregular high-frequency words, support grade-level instruction, and provide additional practice and targeted support as needed. The lessons include clearly stated learning targets, educator-led explanations, modeling, guided practice, independent application, and opportunities for review and feedback. For example, in the lesson “Read and Spell High-Frequency Words” educators explicitly introduce both regular and irregular high-frequency words and explain how to determine whether to decode words using expected letter–sound correspondences or recognize them as Heart Words. During the “Teach” section educators model how to decode regular words such as
and by blending the sounds, and explain the irregular sound–spelling patterns in words such as
the and
is. Students then practice decoding additional high-frequency words with educator support before independently applying the same process. These instructional supports provide explicit explanations, educator modeling, guided practice, review, and feedback while supporting grade-level instruction and providing targeted remediation and acceleration when needed.
Similarly, the educator-led lessons provide explicit, direct instruction in encoding. The lessons include clearly stated learning targets, educator-led explanations, modeling, guided practice, independent application, and opportunities for review and feedback. For example, in the lesson “Reading and Writing the High-Frequency Word
Was” educators explicitly model how to encode
was by segmenting it into individual letters and explaining its unexpected sound–spelling relationship. During the “Teach” section educators model writing the word while saying, “
W-
A-
S,
was,” and explain the irregular spelling pattern. Students then practice encoding the word with educator support, and later they apply the same routine independently. These instructional supports provide a gradual release from educator modeling to student application while reinforcing orthographic mapping, accurate spelling, and automatic word recognition, supporting the program’s stated purpose of enhancing grade-level instruction and providing targeted remediation and acceleration when needed.
