Evaluation for 4.A.3b
Materials include explicit (direct) instruction in decoding and encoding words using sound-spelling patterns in alignment with grade-level TEKS as appropriate for the program's stated purpose.
The Amira Instruct educator-led lessons provide explicit, direct instruction in decoding words using sound–spelling patterns aligned with the grade-level TEKS. The lessons also support grade-level instruction and provide additional practice and targeted support as needed. The lessons include clearly stated learning targets, educator-led explanations, modeling, guided practice, independent application, and opportunities for review and feedback. For example, in the lesson “Decode and Encode VC
e Syllables,” during the “Teach” section, educators explain that when a word has a silent
e, the vowel says its long sound. They then demonstrate this pattern by changing the word
cap to
cape. Similarly, the lesson “Decoding Words With Silent
E” provides explicit instruction as educators model how to read the word
cake by identifying the vowel, consonant, and silent
e and then blending the sounds. Educators support students as they practice reading words with the targeted pattern, and then students apply the skill independently. These instructional supports connect new learning to previously taught letter–sound relationships and provide opportunities for modeling, practice, review, and feedback as students develop decoding skills.
Similarly, the educator-led lessons provide explicit, direct instruction in encoding. For example, the lesson “Decode and Encode Initial Consonant Blends” includes explicit educator modeling during the “Teach” section, in which educators demonstrate how individual sounds combine to form blends such as
fr in
frog and model how to read and spell words containing the targeted pattern. Similarly, the lesson “Decode and Encode VC
e Syllables” provides explicit instruction in encoding as educators model how to apply the VC
e pattern when spelling words. Students then practice reading and spelling words with educator guidance before independently applying the targeted sound–spelling patterns. These instructional supports provide a gradual release from educator modeling to student application while reinforcing previously taught skills through practice, review, and feedback.
