English Language Arts and Reading - Phonics

Publisher: Heinemann

ELAR, Phonics, Grade 2 (IMRA25)

Program: Units of Study in Reading, Grade 2
Component: Units of Study in Reading, Grade 2 (ISBN: N/A)
Reported Feedback ID 13194226:

The lesson does have words with closed syllables: dragon, magical but there is no explicit instruction on the fact that a closed syllable will have a short vowel sound. This needs to be explicit for students and they need multiple opportunities to practice reading words with closed syllables.

Reported Feedback ID 13183071:

This session guides the teacher to provide support to students reading at Level J when they encounter words with inflectional endings -ing, -ed, or -s by prompting them to "Check for an ending you know. Does that help you read the word?" This is not direct instruction in decoding words with inflectional endings as the instruction is not for all students, only those who encounter a word and who need support.
