Adding a hyphen introduces the potential for students to misinterpret the symbol as a negative sign. Because of this, the comma is the more effective tool to separate the examples from the text of the sentence.
Also, since the sentence is referencing each of the notations, does is the appropriate verb for use in the sentence.
