Evaluation for 5.4a
Materials provide opportunities for students to develop academic mathematical language using visuals, manipulatives, or other language development strategies.
The materials provide opportunities for students to develop their academic mathematical language using visuals, manipulatives, or other language development strategies. For example, in the grade 6 Math Practice TE, the TEKS lesson “Classifying Numbers” provides educator guidance that prompts students to discuss the Venn diagram and the terms used to label each part of the diagram. The guidance states, “Allow students to discuss in groups how the diagram should be labeled, and call on groups to share out by adding labels to a projected diagram.” Students also generate more examples of each category. This activity provides an opportunity for students to develop the terms: natural number, whole number, integer, and rational number. The ability to generate examples also provides an opportunity for students to practice with the vocabulary.
The materials provide opportunities for students to develop academic mathematical language through visual representations and language development strategies. For example, in the
Student Edition, students compare and order rational numbers using number lines and real-world contexts, requiring them to interpret and communicate mathematical relationships among fractions, decimals, and integers while connecting visual models to mathematical vocabulary. In the
Teacher Edition, the Engaging Activity extends this work by having students order rational numbers using multiple representations and contextual situations, reinforcing mathematical language through educator-facilitated discussion and representation-based reasoning.
