Materials demonstrate coherence across concepts horizontally within the grade level by connecting patterns, big ideas, and relationships.
Renaissance Math is a TEKS-aligned supplemental program that demonstrates horizontal coherence by connecting related mathematical concepts within each grade level. The program organizes instruction around major mathematical domains and intentionally sequences lessons so that students build on previously learned concepts while making connections among patterns, big ideas, and mathematical relationships. Lessons use concrete, visual, and abstract representations to help students connect related concepts rather than learn isolated procedures. IBLs further strengthen these connections by requiring students to apply multiple mathematical ideas within authentic problem-solving contexts, reinforcing conceptual understanding across the grade-level curriculum.
The materials demonstrate horizontal coherence by connecting patterns, big ideas, and relationships within grade 5. The
Teacher Guide clearly articulates the conceptual purpose of each skill and explains how it supports future learning. In the grade 5 Use Strategies to Divide Up to 4- by 2-Digit Whole Numbers lesson, instruction begins with the area model to connect students’ understanding of place value and the relationship between multiplication and division using a pictorial representation. The lesson then transitions to the partial quotients strategy and, ultimately, more efficient algorithmic methods. Throughout the lesson, students draw on their understanding of multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 to find larger partial quotients more efficiently, reinforcing how place value understanding supports computational fluency across operations. The
Teacher Guide notes that this skill builds on prior work with dividing four-digit numbers by single-digit divisors and prepares students to divide multi-digit numbers, including decimals, fluently using the standard algorithm. This intentional progression helps students make meaningful connections across skills and develop a deeper, more coherent understanding of mathematics within the grade level.
