Evaluation for 4.2b
Materials demonstrate coherence vertically across concepts and grade bands, including connections from grade K–6, by connecting patterns, big ideas, and relationships.
The materials demonstrate vertical coherence across grade levels by building mathematical concepts and skills in a coherent, developmentally appropriate progression. The
Academic Vocabulary Teacher Guide includes explicit “Connection to Prior Learning” and “Connection to Future Learning” sections that explain how each lesson fits within the broader K–6 learning progression. For example, in the grade 3 lesson “Add & Subtract to Solve Word Problems Within 1,000,” the
Academic Vocabulary Teacher Guide notes that students previously solved one- and two-step word problems within 100 using drawings and equations with unknowns in grade 2. During the lesson, students extend these concepts by using tape diagrams and place value strategies to solve problems within 1,000. The guide also explains that this learning prepares students for solving multi-step problems involving all four operations and equations with variables in later grades. By explicitly connecting prior knowledge, current learning, and future mathematical concepts, the materials reinforce the progression of operations, mathematical modeling, and algebraic reasoning across grade bands.
In the Freckle Adaptive Pathway, the materials demonstrate vertical coherence by connecting mathematical concepts across grade bands and adjusting instruction based on each student’s prior learning. When students struggle with a concept, the program automatically assigns prerequisite skills from earlier grade levels and continues to provide targeted support until mastery is reached. As students demonstrate proficiency with grade-level content, the program advances them to connected above-grade-level concepts within the same domain. After completing a diagnostic assessment, students are placed on a personalized learning pathway that reflects their current level of understanding. If they perform above grade level, the adaptive system immediately provides more advanced tasks that extend their learning. This structure ensures that students receive remediation, on-level practice, or enrichment aligned to their individual progress, reinforcing coherent learning trajectories across grade bands.
