Materials include embedded guidance for teachers to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic, professional, and technical vocabulary, increasing comprehension, building background knowledge, and making cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse.
The materials include embedded guidance to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic, professional, and technical vocabulary through oral and written discourse. The Academic and Technical Vocabulary Support Guide provides a structured three-phase approach that includes pre-teaching, explicit instruction, and deliberate review of vocabulary throughout instruction. Guidance includes the use of vocabulary anchor charts, student vocabulary journals, sentence frames, “Think-Pair-Share” routines, “Turn-and-Talk” activities, and academic discussion stems that support oral language development and vocabulary acquisition. The guide also provides written-language supports such as word banks with visuals, paragraph frames, labeling activities, and fill-in-the-blank responses that help students apply academic, professional, and technical language in written discourse. These embedded supports provide structured opportunities for students to develop and use content-specific vocabulary through both speaking and writing activities.
The materials also include embedded guidance that supports comprehension, background knowledge development, and cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse. Within the Academic and Technical Vocabulary Support Guide, educators are encouraged to create real-life connections to vocabulary, use visual supports, and revisit terms during discussions, reflections, planning activities, and presentations to build background knowledge and strengthen comprehension. The guide further supports cross-linguistic connections by encouraging educators to explicitly teach cognates, strategically incorporate students’ primary languages, and help students apply knowledge from multiple languages to construct meaning. Lesson-level supports for emergent bilingual students provide additional oral and written scaffolds, including sentence and discourse stems, paragraph frames, proficiency-level expectations, and opportunities for students to use nonlinguistic representations when developing understanding of academic concepts. These embedded supports help students increase comprehension, build background knowledge, make cross-linguistic connections, and engage in meaningful oral and written communication using increasingly academic, professional, and technical language.
