Evaluation for 3.2a
Materials include explicit (direct) prompts and guidance for educators to build knowledge by activating prior knowledge, anchoring big ideas, and highlighting and connecting key patterns, features, and relationships through multiple means of representation.
Educators are provided with explicit prompts and guidance to build knowledge by activating prior knowledge and anchoring big ideas. For example, in the “Quadrilaterals, Pentagons and More: Advanced 2D Classification” lesson, educators activate prior knowledge by asking students to recall how they previously classified irregular two-dimensional figures by counting sides and vertices. They connect this understanding to the classification of more complex irregular figures. The lesson anchors instruction in the big idea that a two-dimensional shape’s classification is determined by the number of straight sides and vertices rather than its regularity, symmetry, orientation, or appearance.
Educators are also guided on highlighting and connecting key patterns, features, and relationships through multiple means of representation. Educators display regular and irregular examples, model counting sides, and guide students to compare, sort, and classify shapes using irregular shape cards and a classification mat. The lesson explicitly identifies side count as the key feature used for classification and highlights the pattern that three sides indicate a triangle, four sides a quadrilateral, five sides a pentagon, and six sides a hexagon, regardless of the figure’s appearance.
Students further develop these connections through visual, concrete, oral, and written representations. Students use shape cards and sorting tools, apply touch-and-count and dot-and-count strategies, discuss their classifications with partners, draw irregular polygons, and explain in writing how a shape’s attributes determine its classification. These experiences connect the defining features and relationships among side count, vertices, and shape categories across multiple representations.
