Evaluation for 6.2a
Materials support teachers in guiding students to share and reflect on their problem-solving approaches, including explanations, arguments, and justifications.
In unit 3, lesson 3, activity 3.2, students explore multiple strategies for finding area, including decomposing, rearranging, subtracting, and enclosing. Educator guidance supports discussion by directing educators to record student strategies, discuss additional methods, and identify similarities and differences among approaches. The materials state, “Discussion should center around how different strategies—decomposing, rearranging, subtracting, and enclosing—are used to find area. For each figure, select two students with different strategies to share their work, if possible. Sequence students’ presentations so that, for each figure, a subtracting strategy comes last, as that is typically the most challenging. Before sharing begins, explain to students that they should notice similarities and differences in the strategies shared and be ready to explain them.” These supports help educators facilitate mathematical discussions in which students explain and justify their reasoning.
In unit 6, lesson 8, activity 2, students first solve pricing scenarios independently, then explain their reasoning to a partner, compare alternative approaches, and discuss their decisions. Educator guidance supports selecting students with different solution strategies, such as comparing unit rates, scaling equivalent ratios, or using proportional tables to share their thinking and highlight similarities and differences among approaches. Through MLR2: Collect and Display, educators record students’ mathematical language and strategies using terms such as
unit rate,
equal, and
cost for the same number of items to support clearer explanations. By facilitating opportunities for students to justify whether each offer is a good deal, compare reasoning, and refine their conclusions, the materials support educators in guiding students to communicate and reflect on their mathematical approaches.
