Evaluation for 7.B.2a
Materials support students' coherent use of the elements of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, conferring, editing, and sharing/publishing) to compose text in Spanish, which includes an age-appropriate progression in the conventions of writing. (S)
In grade 4, students learn how to write step-by-step in Spanish using the full writing process—planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The lesson guide helps students progress through each stage with clear examples and step-by-step instructions. In Module 3, students write an opinion essay about why it is important to have support from friends and family during tough times. First, students brainstorm ideas, select a topic, and consider their reasons. Then, they start drafting by reading a sample text and organizing their own ideas using a graphic organizer. As students write, they add details and a conclusion. Later, they revise by fixing sentences, adding punctuation, and making changes based on the teacher's feedback. Students also add sources and improve how their ideas connect. After revising, they edit their spelling and grammar, then publish their writing by choosing how to share it—such as typing it, creating a poster, or posting it online. In Module 5, students write an expository essay about an amazing person. They begin by brainstorming, selecting a person to write about, conducting research, and organizing their ideas in a flowchart. When they draft, they work on writing a strong introduction, clear body paragraphs, and a conclusion. They revise by adding transition words and making sure their ideas are clear. Then, they edit for grammar and spelling, and finally publish their writing with fun details like a glossary or pictures. The teacher is provided step-by-step support in teaching the writing process. For example, in Module 3, one part says: "Pida a los estudiantes que comiencen a planificar su primer borrador decidiendo primero sobre qué van a escribir." This helps the teacher guide students through the writing process from start to finish.
