Evaluation for 5.E.1c
Materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to develop, practice, and reinforce grade-level sound-spelling patterns (through cumulative review). (PR 2.A.1) (T)
The materials include a variety of activities and resources to develop, practice, and reinforce grade-level sound-spelling patterns. Instruction includes modeling, guided decoding, phoneme-grapheme mapping, and irregular word routines. The materials include multisensory encoding and decoding activities such as Say It, Tap It, Map It, Build It. In Unit 6, Lesson 8.2, the routine Say It, Tap It, Map It, Write It supports decoding and spelling of words like read, clean, and please. The activity uses magnets, sound boxes, and writing tools to support phoneme-grapheme mapping through multiple sensory pathways. Lessons also suggest the use of visual aids, phoneme phones, and partner talk to support learning. In Unit 6, teachers use phoneme phones and word cards to help students visualize and rehearse sound-spelling patterns like oa in goat. The lesson guides teachers to prompt students to turn to a partner and say additional words with the pattern, reinforcing the skill through talk and visualization. Cumulative review is embedded through "Quick Checks," decodable texts, and sentence-level dictation tasks. For example, Unit 5, Lesson 8.2 includes decoding passages with both current and prior skills such as blends, digraphs, and silent-e. In Unit 7, Lesson 3.2, students decode VCe syllable words like bedtime and pancake in isolation using the Say It, Tap It, Map It, Write It routine. They then apply those same skills to a decodable strip and a full decodable passage, which integrates previously taught patterns such as blends, contractions, and compound words.
