Evaluation for 2.1a
Materials include a variety of instructional assessments at the unit and lesson level (including diagnostic, formative, and summative) that vary in types of tasks and questions.
The materials include diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments at both the unit and lesson levels. The Assessment Guide contains pre-assessments, post-assessments, and unit-based "Mastery Assessments." For example, in Unit 4, students complete tasks such as identifying and manipulating vowels and sounds, decoding and encoding CVCe words, and identifying irregular high-frequency words. Formative assessments are embedded in daily lessons and use varied tasks. For instance, in Lesson 5.1, students engage in "Say It, Tap It, Map It, Write It," dictation, and independent practice to demonstrate skills like identifying blends (-pt, -lm, -ct, -xt), decoding, and encoding. Teachers assess learning through student responses and hands-on activities such as building words with magnets. Unit 3 includes a variety of diagnostic tasks in the pre-assessment such as phoneme addition and syllable counting. The "Mastery Assessment" is used as a summative tool. It measures phonemic awareness, decoding, and encoding through a range of task types and formats. The "Teacher Guide" and "Assessment Guide" for each unit include both structured routines and assessment formats. Examples of routines are We Do, You Do, and Word Chaining. Assessment formats include oral responses, sound manipulation, and written encoding.
