Evaluation for 3.3c
Materials include embedded guidance for teachers to support emergent bilingual students in developing academic, professional, and technical vocabulary, increasing comprehension, building background knowledge, and making cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse.
Unit 1’s lesson plan demonstrates how each of the unit’s lesson plans provides explicit guidance for supporting EB students through structured vocabulary development and scaffolded academic discourse. The “ELPS and Differentiation” section directs educators to pre-teach key academic and technical vocabulary, model correct pronunciation, and provide sentence stems to support both oral and written responses. The lesson plans also incorporate strategies, such as “Think-Pair-Share” and small-group discussions, to allow students to process and refine ideas through collaborative dialogue before transitioning to independent written work.
Unit 6 provides support for educators to assist EB students with academic, professional, and technical vocabulary before the lesson through pre-teaching vocabulary, such as
competitive landscape and
marketing funnel, in the “Academic, Professional and Technical Vocabulary” section. The “Figurative Language, Idioms, and References” section provides examples of idioms, such as
casting a wide net. The “Instructional Time” section asks students to pronounce, spell, repeat, write, and listen to the vocabulary in order to increase comprehension and build background knowledge. During the lesson, students use “pre reading strategies to develop comprehension, including text features, connecting to prior knowledge, organizing ideas, and making predictions.” The materials give students opportunities to read aloud, show fluency, retell, paraphrase, summarize, and respond to questions.
The materials do not include embedded guidance for educators to support EB students in making cross-linguistic connections through oral and written discourse.
