Evaluation for 5.E.2c
Materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to develop, practice, and reinforce skills to decode and encode regular and irregular high-frequency words (through cumulative review). (PR 2.A.1 & 2.A.3) (S)
The materials include a variety of activities and resources that develop and practice students’ skills to decode and encode regular high-frequency words. Students develop regular high-frequency word knowledge through explicit sound–spelling analysis, phoneme-grapheme mapping, guided reading, spelling, and writing routines. For example, in unit 5, lesson 81, students learn the regular high-frequency word
my through the Tap It, Map It, Examine It, Read It, and Write It routine. Students segment the sounds, map phonemes to graphemes, identify the spelling pattern, read the word in isolation and in sentences, write the word multiple times, and apply it in oral language activities. These routines provide multiple opportunities to develop and practice decoding and encoding regular high-frequency words.
The materials also include a variety of activities and resources that develop and practice students’ skills to decode and encode irregular high-frequency words. In unit 7, lesson 94, students learn the irregular high-frequency word
one by analyzing its unexpected spelling, identifying the regular and irregular sound–spelling relationships, reading the word in isolation and connected sentences, spelling the word, writing dictated sentences, and applying the word in oral language and sentence-completion activities. These instructional routines explicitly develop and practice decoding and encoding irregular high-frequency words through repeated reading, writing, and meaningful application.
The materials reinforce students’ skills to decode and encode both regular and irregular high-frequency words through cumulative review embedded across lessons and instructional routines. For example, unit 5, lesson 82 revisits the regular high-frequency word
my through sentence reading, sentence writing, rereading, and the Extend It routine, while unit 7, lesson 94 revisits
one through connected reading, sentence writing, oral language, and contextual word-choice activities. Previously taught regular and irregular high-frequency words are also reinforced through fluency practice, decodable readers, connected reading, connected writing, homework, and cumulative review routines that repeatedly integrate previously taught words alongside newly introduced high-frequency words.
