Evaluation for 5.E.3c
Materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to develop, practice and reinforce skills to decode and encode one-syllable or multisyllabic words (through cumulative review). (PR 2.A.1 & 2.A.3) (S)
The materials include a variety of activities and resources that develop students’ skills to decode and encode one-syllable and multisyllabic words. Throughout the instructional sequence, students develop these skills through explicit phonics instruction, guided decoding, spelling routines, phoneme–grapheme mapping, and connected literacy activities. For example, in unit 6, lesson 76, students develop decoding and encoding skills using the
ay vowel-team syllable pattern. Students learn to decode words such as
pay by identifying and marking the vowel pattern and then encode words such as
tray by segmenting the sounds, applying the spelling generalization, marking the vowel team, and proving the completed word. Guided reading, spelling, and connected reading activities provide multiple opportunities for students to develop both decoding and encoding skills using the target syllable type.
The materials also provide a variety of activities and resources for students to practice decoding and encoding one-syllable and multisyllabic words. Students practice newly taught syllable types through fluency routines, spelling and dictation, word building, decodable passages, and connected reading activities. For example, in unit 10, lesson 136, students apply decoding skill 1 (“One Must Run”) while decoding multisyllabic words such as
carpet and
starfish by marking vowel patterns, identifying syllable types, dividing syllables, proving each syllable, and blending the completed word. Students apply the same process during spelling by encoding multisyllabic words in syllable chunks, marking vowel patterns, proving each syllable, and reading the completed word. Additional fluency activities reinforce both decoding and encoding through multisyllabic word reading, connected sentences, and the passage “A Clue for the Market.”
The materials reinforce students’ skills to decode and encode one-syllable and multisyllabic words through cumulative review embedded across instructional routines. Previously taught syllable types and phonics patterns are revisited through fluency practice, Dictation Bank activities, decodable passages, differentiated word-level practice, homework, and connected reading and writing tasks. For example, in unit 9, lesson 133, students review previously learned syllable types and phonics patterns before applying them to multisyllabic words such as
began,
remote,
viper,
donate,
delete, and
robot. Students mark vowels, divide syllables, prove each syllable, decode each word, and then encode the same words during Dictation Bank activities. Additional resources, including word-level practice materials, decodable cards, roll-and-read activities, fluency pyramids, and decodable passages provide ongoing cumulative review that reinforces previously taught decoding and encoding skills while integrating newly introduced syllable patterns.
