Evaluation for 6.1a
Materials include experiential learning through classroom experiences (e.g., labs, workplace simulations, project-based learning) and/or work-based learning (e.g., job shadowing, internships, practicums) to develop or reinforce the real-world application of technical and employability skills in the context of the course and aligned to the appropriate level on the work-based learning continuum.
The materials provide work-based learning experiences through SAEs and classroom learning through industry-focused investigations and problem-solving projects. Students engage in agricultural practice, use industry-standard tools and processes, and apply technical knowledge to real-world environmental and land management challenges. In unit 2, activity 1, ”How Can You Design a Plant-Based SAE to Aid Your Future Career Search?” students explore plant and soil science career pathways and select an SAE topic that aligns to their interest, such as plant propagation, seed testing, plant production, soil management, or greenhouse research. Students then develop a project proposal by outlining project goals, required materials, procedures, timelines, and methods for documenting progress. As they plan, document, and evaluate their SAE topic, students apply technical knowledge from plant and soil science while practicing employability skills such as project management and organization, responsibility, and recordkeeping.
In unit 4, activity 2, “Can You Model Soil Contamination Pathways and Design Remediation Solutions?” students investigate how contaminants move through soil systems and evaluate the potential impact on land use and agricultural productivity. Students research contaminated sites, model contamination pathways, and develop remediation strategies using engineering and scientific practice. Students must analyze and apply technical knowledge as if they were agricultural scientists, soil specialists, or environmental professionals. This activity reinforces critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills while students apply plant and soil science concepts.
