Evaluation for 1.2a
Materials include comprehensive unit overviews that provide the background content knowledge and academic vocabulary necessary to effectively teach the concepts in the unit.
Throughout the Teacher's Edition, Teacher Tip boxes provide guidance and background content knowledge. The tips give educators a broader understanding of the lesson sequence, and necessary information for instruction in future lessons. The "Background Content Knowledge Unit Overview" summarizes all lesson instructions and background content knowledge in one place. For example, the overview of Lesson 1 states, "Unit 1: Lesson 1, Introduction and teaching of the instructional routines that will be used throughout the rest of the lessons." The resource also outlines the unit rationale by highlighting upcoming "increasingly more difficult PA skills" and "new letter sounds." For each unit, the Scope & Sequence provides an overview, and a list of all academic vocabulary. For example, Unit 1 has the academic vocabulary: "cover, title, author, illustrator, top, bottom, front, back, routine, first, last, adding, finger stretch, syllable, straight, phrase, segmenting, mid-line, beginning, end, keyword, first, direction, sentence, uppercase, lowercase."
