Evaluation for 5.E.2a
Materials include a systematic sequence for introducing regular and irregular high-frequency words. (PR 2.A.1)
The Writing Road to Reading contains a comprehensive high-frequency word list compiled from a research-based collection, which is used throughout the primary grades. The materials do not present the high-frequency words in a systematic sequence. For example, the first ten words on the high-frequency list contain four long vowels, three short vowels, one exception, and two nasal vowels. As a result, students will not master the simplest skills before moving on to more complex ones. In Academic Week 3, the materials include the mix of regular and irregular high-frequency words: first, sent, cent, mile, seem, even, without, afternoon, Friday, hour, our, wife, state, July, head, story, open, short, lady, reach, better, water, round, cost, price, become, class, horse, care, and try. The list includes a mix of open and closed syllable words with short and long vowel sounds, vowel teams, blends, VCe, and digraphs, which do not progress from simple to more complex.
