Evaluation for 5.2b
Materials provide opportunities for students to practice the application of efficient, flexible, and accurate mathematical procedures throughout learning pathways.
Chapter 2 presents skip counting as repeatedly adding the same number (skip counting by 4 gives 4, 8, 12, and 16 because 4 is added each time), and the materials teach skip counting as a strategy connected to multiplication and repeated addition, stating, “Skip counting and repeated addition are really the same thing, and they are both great ways to find multiples!” Students apply skip counting as an efficient procedure for finding products and multiples.
Students practice efficient mathematical procedures by applying the commutative and associative properties to rewrite multiplication expressions to simplify computation. For example, in chapter 6, students compare 5 × (2 × 7) and (5 × 2) × 7 and recognize that regrouping the factors creates the easier multiplication fact 10 × 7 while maintaining the same product.
In chapter 2, students apply accurate procedures when using multiplication charts. The materials state, "we could put one finger on the left 8, and another finger on the top 3. Then we slide our fingers in straight lines (staying inside the “8” row and the “3” column) until they run into each other at the answer: 24!" Students repeatedly practice this procedure to accurately determine products.
