Grade 2 materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to develop skills for decoding and encoding. The students receive scripted lessons from the teacher, have a plethora of charts to reference in the classroom, and a Student Spelling Dictionary. For example, in Lesson 37, students learn about the long sound of the digraph oo. Students decode moon, hoot, and boot as a class, going with teacher guidance. Students spell the sounds they have learned so far. At the end of the lesson, students decode foot, mule, broom, and booth. Students spell the words food, soon, and good. The materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to practice skills for decoding and encoding. Students have the opportunity to practice with Worksheets, Boardwork, Spelling Sound Review, Decodable Readers, and Fluency Readers. For example, in Lesson 17, students decode the words has, is, and his during the New Increment section of the lesson. Next, students encode spelling sounds learned so far. During Boardwork, students code and read the words mitten, so, black, and as. Students spell splash, ship, bunch, as, has, and runs. Grade 2 materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to reinforce skills for decoding and encoding one-syllable and multisyllable words. Students reinforce skills through Decodable Readers, Fluency Readers, Homework, Decodable Practice Masters, and differentiation activities. For example, in Lesson 98, students learn about spelling with the Final C. Students read the connected text as a six-sentence paragraph to reinforce the learning. In addition, students practice the words with final ck, k, ke, and c with the rules for each on the Spelling Word Wall Card. Students spell words such as plastic, magic, bank, attic, spark, wake, and block.
