Evaluation for 5.1a
Questions and tasks provide opportunities for students to interpret, analyze, and evaluate mathematical concepts and complex, real-world situations.
The materials provide questions and tasks that allow students to interpret and analyze mathematical concepts, models, and representations. In the Scientific Notation with Positive Exponents puzzle talk, students interpret powers of 10, exponents, and scientific notation using visual models and number-line representations, and analyze the relationship between repeated multiplication and exponential notation. Students explain connections between expressions, such as “3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 3⁴” and “7 × 10⁶ = 7,000,000,” to develop conceptual understanding of place value and exponent relationships.
The materials provide questions and tasks that allow students to interpret, analyze, and evaluate mathematical reasoning, models, and representations. In the Scientific Notation with Positive Exponents puzzle talk, students evaluate solutions through discourse questions, such as “What power of 10 should we choose?” and “Is this number written in scientific notation? How do you know?” Students justify their reasoning, compare representations, and explain whether expressions and numbers meet the requirements of scientific notation.
The materials provide opportunities for students to interpret, analyze, and evaluate mathematical concepts in real-world situations. In the Representing Real-World One-Variable Equations with Visual Models puzzle talk, students interpret real-world scenarios, represent situations with one-variable equations containing variables on both sides of the equal sign, analyze visual models and equations, and evaluate solutions by discussing how the equations represent the context before solving. Similarly, in Representing Real-World Linear Relationships with Graphs, Tables, and Equations, students analyze situations involving map scales, bowling costs, and ordering baseballs by interpreting and evaluating graphs, tables, and equations that model the relationships.
