Evaluation for 1.2a
Materials include comprehensive unit overviews that provide the background content knowledge and academic vocabulary necessary to effectively teach the concepts in the unit.
Unidad 6: Progresión de números hasta el 120 outlines how students use their knowledge of place value to generate and represent numbers up to 120 in different ways. The unit also introduces relational symbols and connections to future learning in grade 2. Unidad 7: Dinero y educación financiera personal guides teachers by explaining that, in grade 1, students will expand their knowledge of money regarding coins and dollars. Previously, in grade K, students learned to identify the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. In grade 1, students use a cuadrícula along with these coins to explore the relationship between the value of the coins. The materials provide academic vocabulary as well. For example, in Unidad 7, direct instruction includes the following academic vocabulary words: centavos, donaciones benéficas, moneda, diez centavos, dólar, ganar, dinero, necesidad, moneda de cinco centavos, pago, centavo, servicios, habilidad, deseo, and trabajo. The materials instruct teachers to utilize this vocabulary during instruction, along with the students' informal language, to help them better understand and connect with learned experiences throughout the unit. Teachers add this vocabulary to the muro de palabras. They teach the vocabulary along with the concepts in the unit.
