Evaluation for 5.C.2a
Materials explicitly (directly), and systematically introduce letter-sound relationships in an order that allows for application to basic decoding and encoding in Spanish.
The materials explicitly and systematically introduce letter-sound relationships in an order that supports decoding and encoding in Spanish. The ¡Estoy listo! English Guide for School Leaders states that Hola Books "explicitly focus on direct instruction and application of skills to decode and encode." The sequence builds on Hola Books' Level K, beginning with words with three or more syllables containing all sounds and ending with prefixes and suffixes. For example, in Semana 2, Día 1, students practice separating words into syllables and phonemes (e.g., levanta, le-van-ta, /l/ /e/ /v/ /a/ /n/ /t/ /a/). The "Secuencia de enseñanza" outlines the letter-sound sequence and aligns with most foundational Spanish phonics programs. Instruction begins with high-frequency, consistent sounds such as l, s, m, p, and t, then progresses to less frequent consonants such as n, f, v, b, and r, followed by more complex and phonetically confusing letters including c, z, h, y, g, j, and w. The program begins this instruction in Serie verde, where all letter-sound correspondences are reviewed. The materials include encoding practice throughout. In ¡Estoy listo! Mi cuaderno de práctica, students identify the initial sound of a word by looking at a picture, saying its name, and writing the first letter. In Guía del docente, Volumen 1, Semana 2, Día 1, Step 10, students listen to a sentence read aloud by the teacher and write the words and sounds they hear. In Week 8.1, students work with c /k/, y /y/, h /h/, and z /s/, and in Section 3, "Dictado," they use whiteboards to encode a range of sounds, including /k/, /y/, /h/, /s/, /g/, and /rr/.
