Evaluation for 5.1c
Materials include repeated opportunities for students to practice using specific vocabulary in multiple contexts.
In the unit 1 text “Jesse Owens—Champion Athlete,” students encounter targeted vocabulary such as
medals,
wrench,
exceptional, and
soared and apply context clues to determine word meaning. The educator guidance directs educators to monitor students’ use of vocabulary strategies, and follow-up questions require students to analyze and explain word meanings using concepts such as
dictionary entries,
prefixes,
suffixes, and
homophones. Subsequent texts, including “Puffins, Clowns of the Sea,” reinforce these vocabulary concepts by requiring students to apply prefixes, synonyms, antonyms, and dictionary skills in new reading contexts.
The
Teacher Edition embeds additional vocabulary practice through structured instructional routines. In the “Activate Prior Knowledge” activity, students co-construct a chart identifying context clue types, including definitions, examples, synonyms, antonyms, and descriptions, and revisit these terms throughout the lesson. In the “Understanding the TEKS” and guided practice sections, students read, discuss, and apply vocabulary terms such as
definition,
synonym,
antonym, and
example in oral and written responses. Guided practice activities require students to identify context clue types within passages and apply vocabulary knowledge across varied instructional contexts.
