Evaluation for 4.2b
Materials demonstrate coherence vertically across concepts and grade bands, including connections from grades 3–12, by connecting patterns, big ideas, and relationships.
The Standards Alignment Guide for grade 7 provides an explicit vertical rationale that demonstrates coherence across concepts and grade bands by dividing the material into five overarching mathematical strands. For example, the “Linear Relationships and Proportional Reasoning” strand connects patterns, big ideas, and relationships from grade 3 through Algebra II. In grades 3–5, students explore multiplicative relationships through equal groups, arrays, and input-output tables, generating numerical patterns and describing relationships between paired quantities. Grade 6 formalizes this work into ratios, rates, and unit rates, requiring students to compare two quantities using ratio language, generate equivalent ratios using tables, and graph proportional relationships on the coordinate plane. Students also represent relationships with equations of the form
y =
kx and
y =
x +
b and identify independent and dependent variables.
Grade 7 deepens proportional reasoning by applying it to constant rates of change, similar figures, and percent increase and decrease. Grade 8 formalizes the transition to linear functions by requiring students to distinguish between proportional and nonproportional linear relationships, define
slope as the rate of change, and write equations in the form
y =
mx +
b. Algebra I provides a comprehensive study of linear functions through multiple representations and solution methods, and Algebra II extends to systems of three equations and more complex function analysis.
