Evaluation for 6.1c
Materials are designed to require students to make sense of mathematics through multiple opportunities for students to do, write about, and discuss math with peers and/or educators.
The materials engage students in mathematical tasks that require them to apply concepts, strategies, and reasoning while working independently and collaboratively. For example, in unit 2, lesson 2, students identify
x- and
y-intercepts, determine the equation of a line through two given points, sketch the line, create a graph to test ideas, and discuss their reasoning with a partner before participating in a whole-class discussion.
The materials encourage students to record, explain, and justify their mathematical thinking through written responses that communicate their reasoning. For example, in unit 3, lesson 4, students record explanations in their exercise workspace, explain the use of solid or dashed boundary lines, justify the shaded solution regions, and use sentence frames to communicate their mathematical reasoning while sharing solutions with the class.
The materials include collaborative discussions that encourage students to explain their reasoning, respond to others’ thinking, and communicate mathematical ideas using precise language. For example, in unit 3, lesson 4, educators facilitate turn-and-talk discussions throughout the lesson as students work in pairs or groups, respond to discussion prompts, present solutions on the board, and compare similarities and differences in their classmates’ explanations.
